Across the Ice and around Caribou Island

Feb 13, 2026

Years ago, I went on a hike with the Thunder Bay Hiking Association across the ice from Crystal Beach to Caribou Island. It was my first time walking on the frozen surface of Lake Superior. I have been thinking about going back there by myself for a while. I wanted to spend more time looking for compositions and setting my own pace. Today was the day it was meant to happen. I parked my car at Amethyst Harbour and crossed from there to the southern tip of Caribou Island. On my way there I ran into this deer family crossing in the opposite direction. I hiked around the island and learned there was a trail from the back side of the island to the lake at the top of the island. Thank you, Nature Conservancy of Canada for investing in this beautiful part of Canada and allowing it to be enjoyed by generations to come. I will probably add more details about this hike in my blog, although I will probably be the only one who will ever read it.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

Feb 12, 2026

A cave I stumbled upon while hiking the frozen lake shore of Lake Superior off Fort William First Nations a few years ago. I had an opportunity to revisit that beautiful shoreline again recently, and of course I wanted to see what the cave looked like this winter. A beautiful thing about winter is that the same landscape might look very different season after season. Anyway, a feature of the cave I missed last time was this window which is blocked by icicles. This photograph presented several technical challenges from the standpoint of the extreme dynamic range and the need to do focus stacking. I had to take close to 20 photos at different exposures and focal points and then combine them all to get everything lit right and in focus.

A Window for a Day

I love winter photography. Not only do you have all of those ice formations to enjoy, you can also reach places that would be difficult otherwise to get to and thus unlock even more potential from the same area.

The Long Lens Saves the Day

Jan 12, 2026

I had a beautiful hike on a trail covered with fresh snow and was able to come up with a couple of nice photos from the hike, but they did not feel … different.

While driving home, the light on the horizon caught my eyes, and the layers of cliffs, snow, trees, and clouds looked like an awesome composition.

I pulled over by the side of the road, grabbed my camera and 60-600mm Sigma lens, found a spot with no obstructions or distractions and composed the shot below. I really liked the end result.

Last Sunset of 2025

Jan 1, 2026

I did a nice evening hike to capture the sun setting on Dec 2025.

I had a specific composition in mind, and after taking my photo there, I started backtracking to chase the light, as the shadow of the Sleeping Giant grew longer over Lehtinen’s Bay. I was able to capture a few more photos I liked this way, and this is one of them, taken roughly 2km from the original destination.

It is good to keep an open mind and explore other ideas when out taking pictures, especially on a cold and windy day when it’s taken hours of driving and snowshoeing to get there, you might as well make it count! More photos from that day in the Winter Gallery

A New Look

Dec 12, 2025

The web site had the same look since the very beginning, and I thought it was time for a change. The home page will no longer be static, instead it will be a news area letting visitors know of updates, blog entry additions, etc.

The gallery page now features four sections, showcasing photos by season taken. Some photos may have been considered winter despite being actually spring because of the look. Spring where I live is weird. I might add other sections later, like urban, etc.

Same Location - New Inspiration

Dec 7, 2025:

One of the spots I frequent most - the Sea Lion. I was able to find a new composition that I really like. This goes to show that you can keep visiting the same areas and find new inspiration. It could be a different light, different weather or just a different vantage point.
